It Sounds Strange, But You Need This Coloring Book

Who says coloring is for kids? It’s not. Coloring is for enjoying yourself, for relaxing, for tuning out the rest of the world. Coloring makes us feel happy. It’s cathartic. It’s science!

So when I heard Yotel and Ian Sklarsky were coming together to create a coloring and activity book made specifically for adults, I obviously had to snag my own copy. $8 and a few days later, my escape from adulthood arrived.

If you’re not familiar with Yotel, here’s what you need to know. Yotel is a hotel brand with several locations around the world. The closest one to you is probably New York City. Their niche is in creating affordable luxury out of small spaces. Think high class modern efficiency. And when I say “small spaces,” I don’t mean “not enough room.” I mean that they’re very practical in their luxurious designs.

If you’re not familiar with Ian Sklarsky, he’s a world renowned artist, famous for blind contouring. Basically that means he draws a portrait of you while never looking down at the paper, and without picking his pen up off that paper. Yep, portraits made from one continual line without looking. Impressive, huh? I love this style. It’s unique, and it’s a perfect fit for this partnership.

The Yotel Coloring & Activity Book brings NYC together with the art of blind contour so that you can relax, rejuvenate, and recoup. (There’s also a contest for a free stay going on. Just post your creations on Instagram or Twitter with #YotelMasterpiece, and tag Yotel and Ian.)

Yotel Coloring Activity Book

Throughout the book, there is, of course, several places to color in and outside the lines (though their motto is “color outside the lines,” so you might want to do that). But the activities are even better than the ones you got as a kid. You get to make a disco ball for crying out loud! You also get to reimagine your own version of Times Square, as well as get lost in any of the many writing prompts provided. It’s fun, and to be honest it’s helped me destress a lot.

Here’s what’s great about it in practice. You come home from a long day at work or school. You’re tired, but you want something to do. Throw on an episode of Friends, color in Lesley (one of the characters in the book), and you’re good to go. Trying to wake up in the morning while coffee kicks in? Jump start your brain by choosing different eccentric hats for statues to wear. See? Fun and practical.

Be honest. We all enjoy light hearted activities like this. And we often need them to help us through the rest of our day, or to distract us from what terrible things life throws at us (like when your favorite taco joint somehow runs out of cilantro).

I’m a huge fan of the artistry behind The Yotel Coloring & Activity Book, and I love that Yotel and Ian Sklarsky came together to bring this kind of creativity to the mainstream. It’s practical, unique art.
