Your Success Will Not Come From “Hustling”

Your Success Will Not Come From Hustling

There’s a mantra trending right now. Popularized by such figures as Gary Vaynerchuk and other seemingly misguided “wantrepreneurs,” too many people are chanting that they “hustle.”

“I wake up, and I just hustle until 11pm, and then I start it all over again.” Give it a rest, guys. You’re better than that. However you want to define success, “The Hustle” isn’t taking you there.

“The Hustle” is all about trying to wok hard all the time. I use the word “trying” loosely, because the entire thing is an open-ended, undefined concept. Trying could actually mean doing nothing, yet having good intent to do something. “The Hustle” that these people keep referring to is all about letting your passion for greatness be your driving factor day-in and day-out.

This is utterly absurd!

Passion does not get you where you want to go. It might be the fuel, but it’s not the car. Name one person who’s achieved success, become a great leader, or significantly influenced a large group people in a positive way without clearly defining who they are, what they do, why they do it, what they’re goals are, and what they’re going to do on a daily basis. Who comes to mind?

Don’t worry, I’ll wait…

No one comes to mind. Successful people don’t “embrace the hustle.” They use their time well to intentionally provide value for others. Successful people aren’t day dreaming about “If I work hard enough, I’ll achieve greatness.” That’s not how this works. That’s not how any of this works!

Forget “The Hustle.” Forget some burning passion to do everything all the time. I guarantee that you’ll wake up some days and not want to do anything. I promise you’ll get tired, discouraged, or want to do something else. That’s why it’s so important to have clearly defined goals, and to update them along the way. You have to actually give yourself something tangible to achieve!

Gary Vee and his followers are acting like illogical, emotional robots. Whether you have energy and passion is not important. What’s important is that you make a commitment to do X,Y, and Z. People seem to forget that a commitment to do very specific things each and every day is what leads them to success.

It’s not “hustling,” it’s spending an extra 30 minutes at the office to finish a project. It’s not “hustling,” it’s waking up earlier so you can fit in a workout. It’s not “hustling,” it’s intentionally setting aside time to do X.

The concept of “The Hustle” is blind ambition, which, for anyone with defined goals, is incredibly frustrated to be around. The ironic part is that the people you need to surround yourself with to succeed are the articulate ones with the well-defined goals, who actively work towards those goals, and continually monitor the process.

The people who need to remove from your life are the ones with blind ambition “hustling” everyday. Unharnessed energy creates chaos, not success.
